The open highway is a metaphor for freedom, but for wildlife, it is a dangerous border. Many people are indifferent to roadside killings. Some will turn away from it, describing it as the macabre. To quote Thomas Findley, “Their little gestures of pain—paws, wings and tails—are the saddest, the loneliest, most forlorn postures of the dead I can imagine”. I see roadkill every week, and it saddens me that these creatures have no escape from all the poor environmental decisions we impose upon them.
