This project took place in 2004 and was a landmark in my journey. I wanted to improve my repertoire and address a preoccupation with expensive camera equipment.
This minor lane was very close to home and convenient for cycling to work. Despite its closeness to Leicester and the M1, it still had rural charm and was a pleasure to use.
I used a fixed-lens compact film camera and took many roadside photographs. The project proved pivotal. I learnt about how time, seasons and weather affect what we see. Most importantly, I realised the value of documenting seemingly inconsequential details.
I recently produced a one-off handmade book with these images, which was very satisfying. When I first saw these scenes, no one knew this land was to be bulldozed and built on.
